"Villanelle: The Songs Of Maura Kennedy And B.D. Love" (Varèse Sarabande, 2015)

Music

B.D. Love has been composing, performing and recording music since the 1980's in a variety of styles. He's fronted bands (My Sin,) and he's been the silent songwriting partner in others. He brings his artistry as a poet and writer of fiction to his songs in ways most songwriters rarely approach.

His latest work as a songwriter comes in the form of a collaboration with musician Maura Kennedy (The Kennedys) first with a holiday single, "Beneath The Mistletoe" released digitally in November 2014, and a full-length CD of their first batch of songs written within the first month of meeting. This album, titled, "Villanelle: The Songs of Maura Kennedy and B.D. Love" was released May 12, 2015 on Varèse Sarabande.

Maura says this about their collaboration, "Buddy's lyrics are much different than anything I would naturally write. Where I would write in straight four line stanzas, verse-chorus-verse-chorus-middle eight-chorus, for example, Buddy will write a Villanelle or a Sonnet, or some brand new form with odd-length sections and stand-alone lines, or with a litany at the end. He's so creative, and as a result of his approach, I'm forced to write melodies in these new and different (to me) styles. I find I'm writing melodies I never would have imagined before. The real trick is to fit my music to these challenging forms without having them sound forced. It's made me a much better, more interesting songwriter as a result."

Maura Kennedy and B.D. Love were both part of the creative Syracuse, NY music scene in the 1980s. B.D. was front man for the original band My Sin, and Maura, at that time still a teenager, was soaking up the music down on the dance floor, her own turn at performing still a few years ahead of her. Both went on to successful careers, B.D. as a published poet and writer of fiction, and Maura as one-half of the folk/rock duo, The Kennedys.

In 2014, both were invited separately to participate in a reunion of the 1980s music scene called: BRIGHT LIGHTS! A Syracuse New Wave Rock 'n' Roll Reunion. B.D. could not make the trip back East from California, but Maura's home in New York City was just a short road-trip away, so she once again made the scene. As she was not yet a member of a band during the 80s, she was asked to perform a set of songs by bands not able to make the reunion. She selected a song by B.D. Love's band, My Sin called "Manifest Destiny." A member of the audience shot video of the performance and posted it online, where B.D. Love saw it. After writing to Maura to express his appreciation for the performance, the two began collaborating, with B.D. sending lyrics to Maura, Maura writing the music, and, with her husband Pete Kennedy, recording the songs. Within 5 1/2 weeks, B.D. Love and Maura Kennedy had finished writing and recording seventeen songs, and all fifteen tracks are included on their first CD.
